Hold My Nose on Paul McCartney

Niles, I grew up in a White liberal neighborhood in the 60’s and watched first hand as the protest movement among White radical artists, folk groups mainly, got ripped off by the Beatles. The vacuous “I Want to Hold your Hand,” and “She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,” were the standard bearers of a car-salesmen-type commercial endeavor. Yes, they aimed at ten year-olds in the ‘60’s too. I was ten and had enough guidance from my parents to boycott the Beatles, especially that Paul McCartney person — the most vacuous and businessman artist of the group. I have never been able to stand Paul McCartney.

When Ebony and Ivory came out, I’m a full-blown adult, years past the halcyon days of the Black Liberation Movement. The song made me nauseous. I love Stevie Wonder, and maybe you’re right that he needed a way to make some money. I won’t begrudge him that. It did make me feel better when I heard McCartney moan and complain how painful it was recording with Stevie: “He’s a perfectionist… It was like pulling teeth. We had to do 30 takes.” Yeah, for someone whose verses are the musical equivalent of what McDonald’s burgers are to cuisine, it was really difficult for him to work with this genius.

The Beatles ripped off White America and introduced McDonald’s burgers for songs. McCartney was the ring leader of this reactionary “movement.” Stevie, for his part, as you mentioned, has produced a pantheon of socially powerful music.
